Abstract

Study abroad is one of the experiences promoted to university students, and target language acquisition is perceived as its biggest outcome. However, compared to social skills or character skills, foreign language proficiency is not necessarily highly valued in the Japanese workplace.
The current study is a case study based on semi-structured interview data collected from Japanese undergraduate students to investigate what outcomes they perceive to be the result of a study abroad. The data were analyzed, and “initiating communication” and “extraversion” were consistently mentioned as outcomes by the informants.
