Different communication styles in different languages:
Examining the business messages of Japanese business people

Abstract

This paper aims to examine how Japanese business people change their communication styles according to the language they use, specifically Japanese and English, by examining business emails written in these languages. As a result of communication style analysis at the sentential and the lexical level, the following results were found. First, when Japanese business people write Japanese-language messages, they tend to use high context communication style, while when they write English-language messages, they often use low-context styles. Second, in both
languages, they tend to reach an overall agreement first, state facts directly, and make requests
indirectly.
