Proverbs and Fundamental Features of Russian Business Culture

Evgeny Kiselev (Post-Graduate Researcher, Kwansei Gakuin University)

Abstract

We live in a world, where business has become global or at least glocal. Nevertheless, business people are never global or independent of their cultural background, even when trying to adapt to a multicultural setting. This paper aims to examine how proverbs can help us in understanding certain aspects of business culture. Empirically, we challenge this question by attributing knowledge preserved in proverbs to the business context and by applying the cultural values revealed in proverbs to Hofstede’s dimensional model. In sum, this paper attempts to answer the question of how proverbs can be utilised to depict characteristics of business culture and linked with known business practices.
