Abstract

Communication apprehension(CA)is recognized to inhibit effective communication and performance in first(L1)and foreign languages. However, studies on the relationship between CA in L1 and English as a lingua franca, as well as the communication frequency, are limited. This study employs the Personal Report of Communication Apprehension(PRCA-24)to compare CA in L1(CAL1)and English(CAE)among undergraduate management students in Japan, along with their relationship with communication frequency. The results for CAL1 are not significantly different from those of young professionals from the U.S., with lower scores in the interpersonal subscale and higher scores in the meetings subscale. Conversely, CAE scores are higher than CAL1 scores across all four subscales. Moreover, the results for CAE are explained by a linear model incorporating presentation frequency. The academic and pedagogical implications of this study are also discussed.
