Abstract

The purpose of the present study is to explore the concept of global human resources and their competencies from the perspectives of young Japanese employees who have been assigned to  work in overseas branches of their companies or institutions. Although producing global human resources has been a major educational goal for over a decade in Japan, it is often indicated that we need more studies to explore what the term means and what kind of  competencies  are required for an individual to be considered a global human resource. To investigate the thoughts and opinions of young Japanese workers on this issue, a questionnaire survey was administered    to 43 Japanese employees belonging to various business fields worldwide. The results indicate  that besides English communication skills, there are important factors that global human re- sources must possess. Therefore, the study concludes that we should not narrow down the meaning or simplify the concept of global human resources. In addition, the study suggests that university educators need to reconsider how students’ interests and competencies should be developed to enable them to become global professionals in the future.
