Effective Writing Strategies for Business Letters: Focus on Corpus Analysis
Yasuo Nakatani （Housei University）
This study addresses the question how writers can create persuasive business letters to
customers. It has been argued that the use of specific communication strategies for business
writing is essential to negotiate with business counterparts in foreign languages. However, there is little research which utilizes a reliable analysis on how actual business documents could use such strategies. By using corpus linguistic approaches, the current study compares real business snail and e-mail letters with sample letters in textbooks and internet resources. The results indicate that actual business letters tend to effectively negotiate with customers by enhancing communication strategies with the use of you-clusters and we-clusters.
