Abstract
Postmerger integration(PMI), that is, combining two entities after a merger and acquisition (M&A), is often the key factor determining the merger’s ultimate success or failure. However, PMI can be complex and time-consuming because it includes considering and implementing actions that enable smooth office communications.
In Japan, despite the 2019 coronavirus pandemic, the volume of M&As is increasing, having reached 4,280 deals in 2021 and valued at JPY 16.5 trillion according to a December 31, 2021 Nikkei newspaper article. In consideration of this fact, the study’s author will conduct a questionnaire survey of officers and employees who have experienced M&A. Based on survey results, the author will then̶from the perspective of building mutual trust between acquirer and acquiree̶analyze office communication issues in the PMI process through the critical discourse analysis approach, specifically,(1)interpersonal trust,(2)systemic trust, and(3)contextual trust. Based on the assumption of cultural differences between the acquirer and acquiree in office communication environment, business knowledge, and methods prior to the merger, the author will examine how the acquirer and acquiree can trust each other and suggest ways for building this mutual trust.
